Upgraded to Captain Commonwealth
The Office of the Commissioner is pleased to confirm that the newly designated Captain Commonwealth has completed his formal transition training and is now authorised to operate in support of a Greater Britain.
Officials described the appointment as “an important symbolic step”, while stressing that the role remains largely ceremonial, advisory and subject to the usual payroll constraints.
Speaking after the announcement, Captain Commonwealth said he was “obviously delighted”, but was keen not to make too much of the promotion.
“It’s a tremendous honour, obviously. But I’m trying to stay grounded. I’ve still got utility bills, uniform costs, and the shield upgrade has turned out to be significantly more expensive than anyone mentioned during onboarding.”
The Captain was required to attend a series of evening classes before assuming the role. These included Advanced Queueing, covering queue selection, lane-change strategy, hesitation etiquette and the moral hazards of joining the shorter line too late.
He also completed Extreme Tea Making, a demanding practical module addressing the challenges of brewing a decent cuppa in hostile environments, including crosswinds, committee meetings and halfway up Kilimanjaro.
After three unsuccessful attempts, he achieved a pass mark of 83.6 on his fourth assessment. Examiners noted particular improvement in kettle discipline, biscuit risk awareness and the correct handling of milk under pressure.
Despite the promotion, Captain Commonwealth has confirmed that he will not allow the additional responsibility to go to his head. Indeed, after pension adjustments, costume maintenance, ceremonial laundering and the gold trim surcharge on his new shield, he expects to be financially worse off by the end of the quarter.
“People see the cape and assume glamour,” a source close to the Captain said. “They don’t see the spreadsheets.”
The Office has asked members of the public not to request personal appearances, shield polishing, queue arbitration or emergency intervention in minor spelling disputes until the Captain has completed his probationary period.
Further guidance will be issued once the uniform allowance has been reviewed by Finance.
